OIAAA NAMES NEW REPRESENTATIVES TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) has approved the nominations of three new positions to their Board of Directors.  The newly created Board positions include Female Representative to the Board, Ethnic-Minority Representative to the Board and Middle School Representative to the Board.

The new Board positions were approved by a unanimous vote of the OIAAA general membership in November, 2018 at the annual OIAAA state conference for interscholastic athletic administrators.  The nominees were approved by the OIAAA Board of Directors at their recent (March 10, 2019) Board meeting.

Nominees approved by the Board include:

  • Female Representative:  Heather Beck, athletic administrator at Elyria City Schools.
  • Ethnic-Minority Representative:  Jason Goings, athletic administrator at Ashland City Schools
  • Middle School Representative:  Heath O’Neal, athletic coordinator, Dublin Karrer Middle School

Each of these new positions will be voting members of the OIAAA Board of Directors and will assume their two-year appointment beginning July 1, 2019 with the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

OIAAA President, Bo Hanson of Pickerington Central High School stated, “We appreciate our general membership’s approval of these new Board positions. By adding these positions to our Board of Directors, we will better serve our ever-expanding membership needs.  As we have grown into the nation’s largest state interscholastic athletic directors’ association, we need to insure that all elements of our education-based athletic administration are being heard and assisted. These newest members will add great vision for our association.”

THREE OHIO SCHOOLS TAPPED FOR “AWARD OF EXCELLENCE” AWARD

Three Ohio high school athletic departments have been selected to receive the Annual “Award of Excellence” recognition in 2019.  The award, a collaboration between the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA), recognizes schools that provide exemplary support and promotion of education-based athletic programming in their school and community.

Recipients of this year’s award are Findlay High School (Nate Weihrauch, athletic administrator), Loveland High School (Brian Conaster, athletic administrator) and Woodridge High School (Nick Mayer, athletic administrator).

The focus of the award is to recognize on-going and consistent efforts on the part of Ohio interscholastic athletic departments that demonstrate best practice in the endorsement and promotion of school-based athletic programming.  Specifically, this award recognizes schools that demonstrate intentional efforts to exemplify the mission and culture of education-based athletic programs as an on-going process.

Jerry Snodgrass, Executive Director of the OHSAA, Bo Hanson, President of the OIAAA and Bruce Brown, Executive Director of the OIAAA issued the following joint statement on the presentation of the award: “Ohio interscholastic athletic programs have always been considered some of the most exemplary programs in the country in reflecting the value our schools and communities place upon education-based sports.  The recipients of the ‘Award of Excellence’ have demonstrated a consistent and well- developed plan to keep the focus of their sport programs upon delivering life-long skills for all participants and mirroring the educational mission of their respective institutions.”

The OHSAA and the OIAAA believe there are several benchmarks which identify quality, education-based athletic programs:

  • School athletic programs are inherently educational
  • School athletic programs compliment the educational experience
  • School athletic programs enhance the educational mission of the school
  • School athletic programs serve as an extension of the academic classroom
  • School athletic programs teach life lessons not regularly available in the academic classroom
  • School athletic programs have courts, fields, tracks, pools and courses as teaching classrooms

Each of the recipient high schools will be honored during the 2019 Ohio Boys State Basketball Championships on Friday, March 22nd at halftime of the 6:00 p.m. Division I state basketball semi-finals at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.  For additional details on the “Award of Excellence” criteria, go to:

GROWING THROUGH OIAAA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Professional growth and training are the hallmarks of progressive educators.  As the “coach of coaches” (along with many other stakeholders connected to your athletic program), the athletic administrator has a high degree of responsibility to maintain their own professional development in being a leader within their school.

The primary mission of the OIAAA is to serve as a conduit in providing training and resources to keep athletic administrators on the cutting edge of their profession.  In today’s world of education, changes, initiatives and legal challenges make professional development an absolute requirement for athletic directors to fulfill their duties successfully.

To assist our Ohio athletic administrators in planning their continued growth and learning curve, the OIAAA offers the following 12-month schedule of options for professional development:

OIAAA Summer Institute: June 11, 12 and 13, 2019

The popular “Summer Institute” returns to Columbus again in June!  The past three summers’ three-day of workshops have seen over 700 roster spots for nearly a dozen workshop sessions and classes.  This year’s schedule of courses will be published in March along with the time frame for each session and housing information for those who intend to stay over in the Columbus area for the Summer Institute.

There will be two “tracks” this summer:  Track One will be oriented to recently-hired or newer athletic directors.  The three days will provide the core courses for successfully starting as an interscholastic athletic administrator along with a key afternoon session with OHSAA staff for orientation to important responsibilities over the summer months.  Attendees can choose to attend individual sessions or complete the entire three days of sessions in meeting course requirements for the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) designation.

Track Two will be focused upon NIAAA 600 and 700 courses.  These supplemental courses are excellent training opportunities for “digging deeper” into successful interscholastic athletic administration.  These courses will be topic-specific and can also be applied to Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) designation requirements. Attendees can choose to take as few or as many of these courses as they desire during the Summer Institute.

The CAA exam will also be offered to those who have registered through the NIAAA office with their CAA Personal Data Form.

All sessions will be held at the OHSAA offices, 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus.

Specific course offerings, times and housing information will be published in mid-March.  Watch for the push-out of this data and be sure to sign up for this great opportunity to grow and learn!

NOTE:  The Annual OIAAA Endowment Golf Outing will be held on FRIDAY, JUNE 14th  in Columbus.  Registration and site information will be published in April.

TWELVE OHIO ATHLETIC DIRECTORS RECEIVE CAA DESIGNATION

November 27, 2018

Twelve Ohio interscholastic athletic administrators recently passed the national exam for the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) designation from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).  The exam was taken as part of the recently completed Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) Annual State Conference, held in Columbus from November 11-13, 2018.

The CAA designation recognizes and incorporates the professional development opportunities provided through the NIAAA’s Leadership Training Institute.  Courses within the Leadership Training Institute have been reviewed and certified by AdvancED, which oversees such accreditation organizations as North Central Accreditation and similar education certification providers.  AdvancEd has validated that the NIAAA courses and certification process demonstrates the ability to meet and exceed national and international standards of excellence. Accreditation is an affirmation of and gives credibility to all programs administered by the association.

Jon Payne (Reading HS), the OIAAA’s state Certification Chair, commented, “The completion of the CAA process by these athletic directors is a reflection of each recipient’s high professional standards and their commitment to the profession.  Ultimately, it is a strong indicator of the type of dedication each recipient has to assure their respective school district and students that education-based athletics is the focus of their efforts.”

OIAAA Executive Director, Bruce Brown added, “There has been a significant increase in the number of Ohio athletic administrators who have sought this advanced designation over the past five years.  As such, we continue to seek opportunities to support this professional development by offering more course training sessions and outreach sites to our membership. We are excited about this current generation of Ohio athletic directors who are certainly some of the best and brightest in the country.”

The twelve Ohio athletic administrators who recently passed their CAA exam were:

Tyler Belew: Hamilton HS

Stephanie Evans: Belpre HS

Christopher Farroni: Catholic Diocese of Cleveland

Eric Goodwin: Coldwater HS

Phillip Gross: The Wellington School

John Henline: Perrysburg HS

Brian Hiscox: Berkshire HS

Steven Kray: Ashtabula Edgewood HS

Nick Mayer: Woodridge HS

Brad Rex: Wapakoneta HS

Eric Ruffer: Bryan HS

Lindsey Smith: The Wellington School

This recent group of CAA recipients increases the list of Ohio CAA designees to well over 200.  For a complete list of Ohio CAA designees, go to http://www.oiaaa.org/ohio-cmaas-and-caas/#caa .
